Hi James. Completed my first ever session of Dwarf Mine and had a blast! I really like the emergent storytelling aspect of the game, and was so upset that my mine fell to a fearsome dragon! I thought I built a pretty hefty defence but it got undermined so quickly! (no pun intended)
I have abit of trouble parsing the dragon's special ability. Does the dragon attack once per turn, and then next age after ive done all my turns, the dragon climbs up the ladder and it leads to one round of combat, rinse and repeat? and every room that he enters/ is taller gets their effect nulled?
Hi russkefan! Thanks for the question! In short, yes, you got the rules right for the dragon.
Persistent enemies like the dragon will attack once during combat on the turn they are rolled. Their health does not regenerate unless otherwise stated, so be sure to track any damage done to them.
Then, on this and each of the following turn's persistent phases, the dragon will attack once. In addition to this attack, the dragon will (after starting in the deepest room in your mine) climb the ladder each turn. Any room it is in, or deeper than the dragon, no longer has the positive effect for your mine.
I hope this helps. Thanks for checking out the game, I am glad you enjoyed it!
Great question. Yes there is a chance - I have a working list of updates and suggestions that I'll get to at some point. I just added this, and will look to see if I can figure this out.
'Tombs' show as a 6x2 room on the 'Player Aid' but 'Tombs' are a dynamic room size. It's a little confusing because it should be similar to the 'Prestige Room' which is 'X x X'. The rules don't mention any minimums for the 'Tombs' so technically, a valid room size is 1x1. The game generally feels as though 2x2 would be min size for a room otherwise it is just a hallway.
I thought that 6 x 2 might be the minimum room size since you specified the value unlike the 'Prestige Room' on the 'Player Aid' sheet.
Special Information Revision?: 'Cost is 1 times the length of the room' 'Must have a height and length of at least 2'
Thanks for the post and the comments. Yes, Tombs should show "X x X" similar to the Prestige Room. And you are correct, the minimum room size for all rooms would be 2x2.
I'll have to go back to my notes and see if the Tombs were supposed to have a different minimum room size.
Also, thank you for the special information revision note as well. I appreciate your time and comment! Thank you for being a fan of games!
Hi - I'm going to be honest, I had to look up what a community copy was.
At this time, I don't think a community copy is a good fit for Dwarf Mine. I do have other free games I make if you're looking to save some money. Thanks for the question though!
Played this game this afternoon and had a blast. Used Inkarnate to draw the map (after detailing it to the specifications of the original map), used a dice rolling app and kept the history as a journal entry in One Note. Was fun and planning for the next turn(s) and how to develop your Mine and what rooms to build was a nice thought exercise. Strongly recommend and will be getting the expansions.
I’ve had a lot of fun playing this. The rules are easy to learn and the mini expansions add some cool things to the game. If you’d like you can check out my review for more about the game in the link below. You can also see one of my maps and a brief history of that mine.
"Hovel - Gain 1 population on each of your turns."
Does this mean a Hovel gains you 1 Dwarf on the same turn it is built? For my first game I went with the house rule that it only takes effect on the turn after. I am not sure which way to go on that one.
My son and I love Dwarf Mine! I have a question about the Root guys though.
Is it if the Root guys roll a 6 on their attack that they take no damage, or if I roll a 6 on my attack they take no damage?
Thematically, it made more sense to me that if the Root guys roll a six, they did the absolute best they can and trounced my dwarves. Plus, it makes them a little more dangerous even if I have a d20 attack die.
Hi Ryan, I am glad to hear you and your son love the game! Thank you for playing!!!
Your thematic description is the correct one - if the enemy rolls the 6, damage cannot be dealt to them this turn. But I believe its the stone folk who don’t take damage on a 6, and the root walkers gain health on a 6.
Just finished my first run through! Made it to age 17 before the dragon killed me. I was so close, too! Got it down to 7 health and it did JUST barely enough damage to kill my last dwarf. Had 36 prestige by the end, along with about 23 coins, a gemstone, and a mithril that I couldn't use because the dragon snuck up my mine and blocked off my mithril forge. All in all, I had a great time, and this was well worth the $5!

Any chance of some A4 versions of the map sheets?

Thanks so much for the review and the comment!!! Great site Mel!
This game has a great, old school dungeon crawl feel to it. Make sure you don't mess up like I do and use all the gold you can when you can.
Love it! Thanks for playing and the video!

Hi Cjleeh, great question!
You can gain 1 dwarf on the same turn a hovel is built.
In general, all room benefits can be used the same turn the room is built.
I hope this helps! May glory and gold fill your mine!
